Objective To investigate the distribution and antibiotic resistance of clinical Enterobacter isolates. Methods A total of 2 519 clinical strains of Enterobacter spp. were collected from 15 hospitals from January 1 through December 31, 2011. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed with Kirby-Bauer or minimum inhibitory concentration method. The results were analyzed according to CLSI 2011 standards. Results Enterobacter cloacae and Enterobacter aero- genss accountedfor 74.7% (1 882/2 519) and 23.0% (579/ 2 519) of the 2 519 Enterobacter strains, respectively. The main source of the isolates was sputum, accounting for 56.6% (1 426/2 519). The Enterobacter strains showed the highest resistance rate to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanicacid, cefazolin and cefoxitin >89%), relatively higher resistance to cefazidime and cefotaxime (37.3% and 50.7%, respectively), and lower resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam, cefepime, cefoperazone-sulbactam, ertapenem, amikacin, or ciprofloxacin (generally between 10% and 20%), and the lowest resistance to imipenem and meropenem (4.2% and 4.5%, respectively). About 0 to 7.4% (depending on specific hospitals) of the 'Enterobacter cloacae isolates showed resistance to imipenem and meropenem. And 0 to 24.6% (depending on speciiic hospitals) of the Enterobacter aero genes isolates were resistant to imipenem and meropenem. Conclusions The surveillance data in 2011 indicate that the antibiotic resistance of Enterobacter spp. does not show signiticant change from previous year. The situation of antibiotic resistance is still very serious. We should take effective measures to control the antimicrobial resistance.
